A Guide To RAM

Every time you speak about a computer you are asked about its RAM. This is one of the most important features that determines the speed and power of your computer

RAM is an acronym for Random Access Memory and is usually in the form of integrated circuits (IC). These are often assembled into plug-in modules. It is manufactured as a small circuit board, with plastic packaging. Because of the way it looks, it is called a memory or RAM stick. Look at any PC and you will notice slots for adding and replacing memory chips.

RAM is the only memory storage device where all memory locations can be accessed at almost the same speed. Other types of memory devices, such as cassettes, disks, floppies, drums can access data on storage mediums in a preset order and there is always a delay in reading specific bits or bytes.

The memory systems used earlier were based on vacuum tubes, but these were very unreliable. RAM uses the same concept but is very dependable. As small as a chewing gum stick, the RAM is the computer’s primary memory available to programs. To illustrate: a computer with 16MB RAM has around 16 million bytes of memory for programs to use. RAM is the most important working area used for presenting and controlling data.

Dynamic RAM (DRAM) and static RAM (SRAM) are the two types RAM available. Both are volatile, which means they lose data when the power is turned off. The basic difference is that Dynamic RAM has to be “refreshed” many times per second. Static RAM, on the other hand, need not be refreshed, making it faster but it is also more expensive. SGRAM is a specialized RAM for graphics adaptors.

Technological improvements in the manufacture of RAM are making computers faster and more reliable. Nonvolatile RAM protects data when the computer’s power is turned off. With new technologies like carbon nanotube technology and magnetic tunnel effect now available, companies like Infineon Technologies and Nantero are offering new revolutionary ideas in the world of RAM.
